The Proliferation of Lies: Misinformation spreads like wildfire online before it can be contained

A Facebook post made Jan. 26 claiming older people who live on social security had to pay for Medicare while undocumented immigrants receive it for free was shared almost 500,000 times on Facebook. Fact-checking organization FactCheck.org debunked that post, but not until thousands of people had already interacted with it.

A video on Facebook claiming pricking someone’s fingers and ears while they are having a stroke could save their life went viral after already having gone viral before. Chequeado, an Argentinian fact checking website, debunked this video Feb. 20, but not before viewers had already interacted with it thousands of times.
